The handmade paper producing technique by ethnic Bai in Heqing has a long history. Early
in Tang Dynasty, Fan Chuo had recorded it in his book Man Shu (A Record of Savages). The white
cotton paper produced in Heqing is as thin as cicada wings and as tough as brocade. The paper
is delicate, even in thickness, insect proof, and waterproof. It is an ideal material for writing,
engraving, mounting, packaging and rituals, and has the reputation of “Anhui Xuan paper is the
best in the world, and Heqing cotton paper is extoled in southwest China”.Today, among the dozens of handicraft workshops in Heqing County, the most famous one
is Yin Wangsong’s workshop in Longzhu village, Songgui town. Papermaking business has been
running in the Yins’for generations. It has been handed down to Yin Wangsong since the ancestors
started making paper 200 years ago. The 51-year-old Yin Wangsong is the ninth generation of heirs
in his family and the successor of the time-honored brand “Zheng He Ji”.
